[Cold Open]
[Clean electric guitar]
DAN...
DIN...
DAAAN...
DAN.
[Voice, very low]
Every night.
Same four notes.
Through the wall.
[Full drums enter immediately]
[Verse 1]
Moved in
near the end of November.
Cheap apartment.
Bad locks.
Neighbor upstairs
arguing with the pipes.
And you...
somewhere
behind my bedroom wall.
Eleven forty.
Almost exactly.
Four notes.
Every night.
DAN...
DIN...
DAAAN...
DAN.
At first
I hit the wall.
You stopped.
I felt guilty.
Next night...
same four notes.
So I picked up my guitar
and played them back.
Wrong.
Completely wrong.
[Band stops]
From the other side:
[Voz femenina]
Muy mal.
[Male voice]
Oh, come on.
[Voz femenina]
Muy, muy mal.
[Drums return]
[Verse 1 continues]
I laughed.
You laughed.
Never saw your face.
Never knew your name.
But after that
every night
became a stupid little argument
made out of music.
You changed one note.
I changed two.
You played faster.
I played louder.
You won
most of the time.
I’ll deny that
if anybody asks.
[Pre-Chorus]
[Guitars pull back]
Then Thursday came.
Eleven forty.
[Silence]
Nothing.
[Cello enters with one low note]
Eleven fifty.
Nothing.
Midnight.
Nothing.
[Voz en español, muy baja]
Y ahí...
empecé a preocuparme.
[Chorus - distorted guitars explode]
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
THAT’S ALL I EVER KNEW!
NO NAME!
NO FACE!
BUT I KNEW
WHEN SOMETHING WAS WRONG WITH YOU!
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
AND NOW THERE’S NOTHING THERE!
¡NO SÉ QUIÉN ERES!
¡PERO JODER...
SÍ SÉ
QUE FALTAS!
[Cracked scream]
SO PLAY IT AGAIN!
[Guitar signature riff]
DAN!
DIN!
DAAAN!
DAN!
[Verse 2 - bass + drums driving hard]
Friday.
Still nothing.
Saturday.
Nothing.
I started inventing reasons.
Maybe you travelled.
Maybe you got bored.
Maybe somebody complained.
Maybe you finally learned
that my guitar playing
wasn't worth saving.
That one hurt.
Sunday morning
I stood
outside your door.
Thirty-four.
Hand up.
Didn’t knock.
Walked away.
Came back.
Hand up again.
[Voz en español]
Qué ridículo.
Ni siquiera sé
cómo te llamas.
[Male voice]
Then I knocked.
[One huge drum hit]
Nothing.
Knocked again.
Nothing.
Then I saw
a folded piece of paper
under the door.
[All instruments cut]
[Voice, almost whispering]
Five words.
“Gracias por haber contestado.”
[Silence]
[Cello answers the guitar motif once]
[Voice cracks]
That’s it?
That’s all I get?
[Distorted guitar begins feeding back]
No.
No, no, no.
[Drums slam back]
[Chorus]
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
THAT’S ALL I EVER KNEW!
NO NAME!
NO FACE!
BUT I KNEW
WHEN YOU COULDN’T SLEEP TOO!
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
DON’T CALL US STRANGERS NOW!
¡TÚ SABÍAS
CUÁNDO YO ESTABA ROTO!
¡YO SABÍA
CUÁNDO TOCABAS CON RABIA!
[Voice tears]
WE KNEW ENOUGH!
[Hard stop]
[Bridge - only clean guitar + very brief piano]
[Voice exhausted]
Three weeks later
somebody else
moved into thirty-four.
Guy with a dog.
Nice dog.
Terrible taste in music.
[Small laugh]
At eleven forty
I still pick up the guitar.
Sometimes.
Not every night.
I play four notes.
Wait.
Nothing.
[Brief violin swell]
And I tell myself:
“Good.
Move on.”
[Pause]
Then last Tuesday...
[Clean guitar stops]
from somewhere upstairs—
[Distant guitar/piano-like four notes]
DAN...
DIN...
DAAAN...
DAN.
[Voice whispers]
No fucking way.
[Final Chorus - full rock explosion]
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
DIFFERENT ROOM!
SAME SOUND!
I DON’T KNOW
IF IT’S YOU
OR SOMEBODY
MESSING AROUND!
FOUR NOTES THROUGH THE WALL!
AND I DON’T EVEN CARE!
¡SI ERES TÚ...
TE ESCUCHÉ!
¡SI NO ERES TÚ...
TAMBIÉN ME VALE!
[Voice climbs into cracked scream]
BECAUSE SOMETIMES
YOU DON’T NEED A NAME!
YOU DON’T NEED A FACE!
YOU JUST NEED
SOMEBODY
ON THE OTHER SIDE
TO ANSWER BACK!
[Band hits]
[Outro]
[Everything disappears except clean electric guitar]
DAN...
DIN...
DAAAN...
DAN.
[Small pause]
[Another guitar answers from far away]
DAN...
DIN...
DAAAN...
DAN.
[Voice, very low]
There you are.
