[Intro]
My mother had a mirror
by the front door.
She used to say:
“Look at yourself
before you walk outside.”
I thought she meant my clothes.
Took me years
to understand.
[Verse 1 – The Son]
First mirror says:
“Make your mother proud.”
So I stand up straight
when the whole room gets loud.
Smile for the family.
Tell them work is going great.
Leave out the part
where I stare at the ceiling till late.
Mama asks:
“You eating?”
Yeah.
“You sleeping?”
Sure.
“You happy?”
...
Of course.
Three answers rehearsed
like a prayer I don't believe,
'cause she carried enough weight
before she ever carried me.
So I learned to hide pain
like it was an act of respect.
Never figured out
who that protection was supposed to protect.
She sees the new shoes.
The better place.
The work paying off.
She don't see me in the bathroom
trying to breathe with the faucet on.
That's mirror one.
Good son.
Strong face.
Don't let the woman
who gave you life
see you coming apart.
[Hook]
Four mirrors.
Four faces.
Same skin.
Different places.
Everybody wants a version.
Nobody asks
which one is hurting.
Four mirrors.
Who am I?
Depends
who walked inside.
[Verse 2 – The Friend]
Second mirror says:
“Don't forget the block.”
Funny.
The block remembers you different
the second your numbers pop.
Old friend says:
“You changed.”
I say:
“Maybe I grew.”
He says:
“Nah, you think you're better.”
That's when history gets used
like a weapon against you.
I remember splitting food.
I remember bus fare.
I remember both of us saying:
“One day we're getting out of here.”
So why does leaving the struggle
feel like betrayal
to people who used to pray
we escaped it?
That's complicated.
Success creates distance.
Distance creates stories.
Stories create villains.
And nobody writes themselves
as the jealous one.
So now every time I do well
I feel guilty celebrating.
Like I owe failure
to the people who knew me before the winning.
That's mirror two.
Loyal friend.
Don't get too high.
But don't stay low.
Somehow do both
so everybody sleeps at night.
[Hook]
Four mirrors.
Four faces.
Same skin.
Different places.
Everybody wants a version.
Nobody asks
which one is hurting.
Four mirrors.
Who am I?
Depends
who walked inside.
[Verse 3 – The Ambition]
Third mirror got my voice
but talks much faster.
Says:
“You ain't done.
Keep going.
Work harder.”
I say:
“I just won.”
It says:
“So what comes after?”
That's the one I fear.
Not the critics.
Not the hate.
The little voice
that turns every finish line
into another starting gate.
It don't care about sleep.
Don't care about love.
Don't care if the people around me
start saying:
“You're not here enough.”
It says:
“Build.”
I build.
“More.”
I give.
“Again.”
I go.
Until success starts feeling
like a landlord I owe.
And here's the joke:
I wanted freedom.
That's why I worked.
Now ambition got me clocking in
for a boss inside my nerves.
That's mirror three.
Clean suit.
Sharp teeth.
Always congratulating me
with another mountain underneath.
[Beat Switch]
[Drums become heavier]
[Voice changes]
You wanted more.
You got more.
Why you still mad?
Because “more”
was never a number.
That's why.
[Verse 4 – The Self]
Fourth mirror doesn't talk.
That's the problem.
No mother.
No friends.
No audience.
No applause.
Just me.
And I hate how quiet
the truth sounds without drums.
Who am I
if nobody needs anything?
If Mama's safe.
If the bills are paid.
If the friends stop calling.
If the crowd forgets my name.
Do I still know
what I actually like?
What I actually believe?
Or did I spend so many years
becoming necessary
that I forgot
how to simply be?
That's harder than politics.
Harder than money.
Harder than blame.
'Cause you can point at a system.
You can point at the game.
But some cages
got your fingerprints
all over the frame.
And that's the part
I don't like saying.
Sometimes the pressure
ain't imposed.
Sometimes you keep the weight
because without it
you don't know
who you'd become.
[Bridge – Spoken]
My mother said:
“Look at yourself
before you walk outside.”
Maybe she didn't mean:
“Make sure you look good.”
Maybe she meant:
“Make sure that's still you.”
[Soft piano]
I should've asked.
[Final Verse]
So now I'm trying something new.
Not quitting.
Not slowing into nothing.
Just learning the difference
between hunger and running.
Calling my mother
without pretending I'm fine.
Seeing old friends
without shrinking my life.
Working hard
without treating exhaustion
like proof I'm alive.
And standing in front of a mirror
without rehearsing a line.
I don't need one face.
That's not honest.
I'm a son.
I'm a friend.
I'm ambitious.
I'm frightened.
I'm grateful.
I'm angry.
I'm proud.
I'm tired.
Maybe being whole
doesn't mean choosing one.
Maybe it means
letting every contradiction
sit at the same table
without asking one
to kill the others.
[Final Hook]
Four mirrors.
Four faces.
Still me.
Different stages.
Everybody wants a version.
I'm done asking
which one deserves me.
Four mirrors.
Now I know:
I don't need
to choose one anymore.
[Outro]
I passed the mirror
by the front door today.
Stopped.
Looked.
Didn't fix anything.
Then walked outside.
